Many people right now pay more attention to alternative energy sources. This is not surprising because individuals are increasingly aware that the availability of fossil fuel resources becoming increasingly inadequate.

Although the fossil fuels provide the most contribution to the world’s energy source, i.e. by 85%, but sooner or later this percentage will shift as more and more consumption of alternative energy sources.

What is meant by alternative energy sources here are the sources of renewable energy such as solar energy, wind energy, biomass, geothermal, and others. Alternative energy sources have many advantages compared fossil energy sources.

Those advantages such as:

  1. Alternative energy sources are cleaner and more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels
  2. There is no risk of price fluctuations as it has ever occurred in the 1970s
  3. Alternative energy sources are available everywhere with abundant supply. Solar energy, for example, is the  mostabundant of all the renewable sources. It supplies 86,000 terawatts of energy compared total world energy consumption which is currently around 20 terawatts.

However, sources of alternative energy sources have also disadvantages. Those disadvantages such as:

  1. Cost required for research and development is still quite big.
  2. Availability of supply is not constant so is less consistent. Therefore, many researches suggest using combination of renewable energy sources.

Have you thought about installing renewable energy sources at home such as solar or wind energy? The use of renewable energy sources can reduce your monthly electric bill, even in some countries, such as United States and China, governments provide incentives for citizens who use sources of alternative energy. In addition, the use of alternative energy sources means that you also participate in the conservation of fossil fuels for our next generation.

In fact, if your house is able to produce solar energy that exceeds the amount of energy you need, the excess energy can be sold and this would be an additional profits for you. Wind energy is also one of the oldest forms of renewable energy found today. Having been around for thousands of years, wind energy as well as solar energy is becoming more common as a way of producing electricity. In years past the energy from the wind was used to pump water, grind grain, and power sawmills.

Other popular sources of alternative energy are geothermal and biomass energy. Geothermal energy taps into the heat from below the surface of the Earth. This technology came about after realizing the Earth has a constant temperature. Biomass energy comes from any plant derived organic substance, with crops and trees, agricultural food and feed crops, agricultural crop garbage and residues, wood waste and residue, animal and public waste, and aquatic plant life.
